Felsenmeer (Lautertal in the Odenwald)
We took advantage of a sunny day in June for an excursion to the south of Darmstadt and Frankenstein Castle to Lautertal and the sea of rocks („Felsenmeer“) there. This over 300 million years old natural spectacle was created by the shifting of continental plates and is today a welcome destination for young and old.
Felsenmeer
Located in the middle of the nature reserve, the “sea of rocks” is a popular place of recreation for hikers who walk their trails on the Felsberg. The Romans already used this area as a source of rock. Later, the Felsenmeer was the source of activity for local stonemasons.

After leaving the parking lot, the visitor goes to the Information Center. In contrary to the information center, the whole area can be explored all year round – without any opening hours. There are public toilets and information material as well as a restaurant. The history of the origin of the Felsenmeer and the developments from Roman times until today can be traced. Geology experts will of course also enjoy themselves here.
Hiking on ancient paths
After a few meters you already reach the foot of the rocky sea. Here you can climb up the path over the rocks or take the more pleasant hiking trail around. Of course, we didn’t want to be inferior to the children in any way and set off on the climbing tour with our feet and hands.
Felsenmeer
On the Felsenmeer bridge you can come to rest and enjoy the scenery and the view. In summer temperatures, this is a popular stop for the many visitors. Afterwards we decided to take one of the many hiking trails further up.

Those who wish can also start their hike from the top. Parking is likewise available in the vicinity of the Ohly Tower. There are many historical and legendary sites and places all over the area. It is said that Siegfried was murdered at the foot of the Felsenmeer. Additionally, further locations like the altar stone, the pyramid, the crocodile or the coffin can be found on the information boards and can be explored.
After so much activity and nature, we enjoyed the rest of the day at the restaurant “Am Felsenmeer” and then headed home towards Frankfurt.
